In 2018, she was named cocaptain. Rapinoe had the chance to score two goals as United States beat Australia 4-3 in the bronze medal game in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Japan had been prevented from attending their participation in the Olympics until 2021 due to COVID-19, a pandemic.
